Births on TV
I like to watch baby shows on TV. Right now I’m watching House of Babies (I forget what channel it is), watching a water birth. And what’s really amusing me about it is that they blur the mother’s breasts… but show the baby’s head crowning. Even more amusing is when the shows show the crowning head, but blur the mother’s pubic hair. It’s just so funny what “they” decide is appropriate for TV!
I’m excited to be watching a natural birth. I have a journal buddy on a forum who is planning for a natural birth as well, she’s at 37 weeks, and I’m so excited to hear how her birth goes! I really want to hear input from people who have gone through it really trying, because the people who just tell me to get an epi because, why not? totally don’t get it.
Den came home in the middle of one of these birth shows. He got a little grossed out. LOL! “He’s videoing it! I am NOT doing that. Eewww eewww!” LOL He cracks me up. He keeps telling me how he’ll be fine during the labor and I just laugh. I think he’s going to freak out. ;)

I suggest you check out the unmedicated birth post category at my site for links to natural birth stories. I call it “unmedicated” as opposed to “natural” because the phrase means different things to different people. For some people it means unmedicated but for others it means vaginal birth, unmedicated or not.
I didn’t get an epidural with my second and third children. I couldn’t because of back surgery I’d had after having my first child. Since I knew an epidural quite simply wouldn’t be an option for me, I prepared beforehand by taking a hypnobirthing class and taking it very seriously. Worked for me! My births were amazing experiences and I wouldn’t change anything about them. Well, except for the retained placenta I had after, but there wasn’t anything I could do about that.
If I can make it as far as I did with no prep … I think if you take the classes and fully prepare for it, you’ll be able to do it. And you might give Den a little more credit, it’s amazing how they can pull themselves together when you need them to. John is NOT a fan of the whole videotaped birth thing either, finds it quite freaky, and yet he was totally involved and helping when I was pushing, watching the whole thing happen with only a mild look of discomfort on his face. (And I can’t blame him for that! *lol*)
Thanks S.! I’ll check that out, for sure. I like the terminology “unmedicated” too.
Kel, thanks. :) I really think I can put in a good effort at the very least. I’m not precluding some kind of weird problem that comes up that changes my decisions during the labor and birth… but, I’m getting pretty committed to the idea. I do know I need to get Den on board though. He walked in during the showing of an unmedicated birth and he said, “She doesn’t have an epidural. She sounds like she’s dying!!” Well duh, honey, I don’t expect it to be painless. lol
