Relaxing Doesn't Make Babies

I really don’t have much to say recently other than moaning about how our AC is not holding up to this heat and I’m whiny and sweaty. Kate started getting baby acne last week and it’s way worse with the heat… breaks out all over her cheeks. :( Poor kiddo. When we sleep we keep the temperature right around 74. Now to me that feels a little cool, especially with the very slight breeze from the fan, so some nights I can’t quite sleep comfortably because I need something covering my shoulders (since I sleep with Kate I can’t/don’t pull the sheet up past our waists). But Kate, who sleeps in just a onesie, wakes up sweaty so I don’t dare turn the temperature up – well, that and my husband would also kill me, as he too gets hot. How in the heck did I get a baby who likes it colder than I do? Yes I’m a wuss.

In regards to her baby bath tub that I so carefully picked out, Kate says, Oh hells no! Fail, double fail. I don’t think there is anything that Kate hates more than she hates that tub. I put in nice warm water, I put a towel down so it’s soft, we make it sound all cute and cuddly as we baby-talk to her and she screeaaaammmmms. So I scrapped that whole idea, filled the big tub, and I climbed on in with her. She’s still not sure about this whole water thing, but she gave it a chance. And the last time I took her in she actually smiled and babbled at me as I swooshed her back and forth in the water and held her on my knees. I think she likes being close to me, and she prefers being totally submerged up to her shoulders, it keeps her warm. I got her all soaped up and rinsed and wrapped her in one of her towels, and no screaming! No crying at all! Then I put her, still wrapped in her fluffy towel, in her little bouncie seat in the bathroom so I could really quickly wash my hair and hopped out just as she was letting me know she was done.

She’s been cooing and making sounds at us for a while now. Nothing delights us more and erases the frustration of why-is-she-crying faster than a grin and a “gah.”

I take all of my baths with Angus and have done since he was four weeks old. He’s always preferred it in the big bath with me. Sounds like your Kate might as well.
    Enjoy the gahs!

N can’t stand the baby bath, either, and we had to resort to getting in with her or taking her in the shower. One thing that did help SOME was taking a wash cloth/hand towel and getting it wet and then putting it over her belly. If you need to give her a bath without you getting wet, too.

(Now n loves the bath… but only a shallow one, on her back, where she’s allowed to kick and kick to her delight.)

  3. Oh, Natalie, I’m so happy for you and Baby Kate. She’s darling! You’re so amazing with her.

She’s so cute. My daughter (whose name is Natalie!) used to hate the tub as a baby, too. But she’d be fine with it if I gave her the paci. She just turned 4 and now I can’t get her out of the tub.

Every kid is different with the water. I actually found that my 2-month-old (also named Natalie) prefers really warm water, borderline hot. Anything cooler than that and she cries. Play around with water temperature and see what happens.

Don’t worry about the baby acne. My first daughter, now 19 months, had horrific baby acne for the first three months of her life. My second daughter only had it mildly and it cleared up in a week or two. My pediatrician recommended washing the face with Baby Aquaphor soap once daily and it really helped.

You’re doing a great job with Kate – she is beautiful!

My baby’s first tub was a washpod (similar to a tummy tub, but cheaper and with a cushion and more stable sides). It was good because it felt secure and the water came up really high on him, keeping him warm. He really liked it and only cried when we took him out. I would have liked to keep using it, but he outgrew it too quickly. We moved to the sink and then we he could sit up better we moved to a bathseat in the big tub. For my kid, as long as he was nice and warm (way deeper water than most advise) he was ok. I really thought about taking a bath with him several times, I think he would really like it, but I’m not such a fan of the bath, so we are both happy with the way things are. Whatever works!

She is gorgeous! I see someone already wrote about the tummy tub — we don’t have a working bathtub so our only option is showers with our little guy or baths in the tummy tub. He is 19 pounds now and 28″ and he still fits in his tummy tub just fine. And he’s liked it pretty much from the beginning. Of course, if I could take baths with him, I would. We just don’t have that option right now. We do also shower with him, but if Kate isn’t thrilled with a bath, she might not like the spraying water.

He also had baby acne. I didn’t do anything for it — just wiped his face off once a day with a warm, wet washcloth. It felt like he had it forever, but now when I look back at pictures it seems like it was just a tiny blip on his early months.
