Clarification Requested
For once I think our insurance coverage’s vagueness works to our advantage. I just called to check to make sure we aren’t going to get dinged for going to IVF so soon. She said the paragraph was indeed typed wrong in the book (well duh I figured that, it’s pretty obvious) and that what it SHOULD say is as follows:
(What it actually was printed was “these cycles are not covered when…” which basically means IVF is only covered if IUI works, which is non-sensical.)
So I asked if there were any specific numerical requirements on those “lesser treatments” before IVF is covered – like, do I need to do all three IUIs before going to IVF. She said no, it doesn’t say so. (Which of course I am aware of, because I can read.) I really think they need to clarify that whole thing and not leave it so open to interpretation, but in any case there is apparently no unstated rule that you MUST do X before Y.
So hopefully we’re all set for a smooth ride in IVF.

Can you ask them to put it in writing? That’ll cover you later on if they renege….
Sounds very promising with the coverage!
Also, wanted to say that I’m having a lap tomorrow (!!) so will be tell you ALL about what it’s like before you go under the knife next week. I’m also nervous about it, but at this point so so so ready for it to be over so I can get started with treatments. Today has been spent doing a bowel prep (do you have to do that?). It’s about as pleasant as it sounds!
Yeah, Carrie, I have to do that too. I can only imagine how much fun that’s going to be. I hope it goes really well for you!
Linsay – I could. But even now they log all calls and questions and what was said… which has covered me in the past when they screwed up. So they have it logged. Not that that’s foolproof. ;) But I’m feeling pretty confident. (Plus we do need pre-auth so the RE’s office will let me know before we start if they deny it.)
That is great! I always thought you had to do X number of IUI’s before IVF. I believe the standard is 3 or so.
Make sure that you write down the names of whomever you talk to so if a billing or insurance issue arises, you have all the info. I’ve had it bite me in the butt before. But, WOOHOO! Onto IVF!
