Relaxing Doesn't Make Babies

Thank goodness I have something to distract me

January 3, 2010 — 5:05 pm

I am nesting. Not cleaning, no no no; I am obsessively sorting through baby clothes. Nevermind that I’m not even 20 weeks yet and I am sure that people will give me hordes of pink girly clothes, I have this need to sort through what I have right now. As soon as we found out this was a girl I took all the truly BOY clothes back down to the basement, stored away for next time – I kept out all the neutrals, and even some blue boy clothes that I love too much to not let her wear at least once. Today I proudly spread out what I have and realized… it’s not very much. Umm. How was I going to clothe a newborn baby with this? Obviously I had planned to go shopping to fill in the gaps before Devin came – something I never ended up doing.

I am also realizing why I was so happy to be having a boy when I was pregnant with Devin: most of the girl clothes scare me. I do not do bows or frilly butts or poofy dresses. I do not do “princess” or themes. I do happen to like the color pink, which I think is the one saving grace here. I just have very specific tastes.

I am buying a couple of pink diaper covers and then I am all set with those. I still need to buy a couple of bottles and a manual breastpump (though I don’t intend to start pumping until a little later, it’s always good to have it on hand, just in case). I never did get around to buying a baby bathtub, we need one of those. I’ll buy a couple more sheets for the crib and cosleeper. The rest… well, the rest is all just gravy, now isn’t it. If we get a bouncer, swing, toys, books, photo frames… all to the good, but they’re not really necessary. Which leaves me kind of adrift, really. What do I do with my time if I have no shopping to do? I think I hear my bank account sighing in relief.

It is damn cold, especially in our basement which hasn’t had the fireplace installed yet. Alas, that is where the xbox lives, so I suffer through it with the little spaceheater we keep between our feet when playing and our old comforter thrown on top of me. (We’re very dedicated gamers, you know. Teeth chattering, fingers cramping, haven’t eaten for hours, but I have to finish this dungeon!!) It makes me wish I was smart enough to buy more hot chocolate when I went shopping, since apparently I am now able to drink it without throwing it all up. The wind is literally howling outside, shaking the windows and blowing the snow across our yard. I have absolutely NO desire to leave the house at all.

Baby girl has taken my laziness as a green light to throw a party in there. She’s been very active all weekend, even kicking last night after Den came to bed, when his hand was on my belly. Feels like she’s moved around and is facing up again, instead of down really low, connecting with my cervix quite frequently (ow, say!). I enjoy it while I can, as soon enough she will flip around again and I will have another few days of quiet, infrequent little bumps.

Well I had better go check on my husband and makes sure he eats something. Maybe if I feed him enough he’ll feel guilty and let me play. ;)

I didn’t do frilly either. I had to expand my horizons on where I shopped. I went to baby gap, old navy…places like that. No lace, no tights with ruffles, no headbands across the head (just not my taste nothing wrong with any of it if that’s your thing)…just made sure I had cute, comfy outfits that were pink and plenty girly but plain with no frills. Still like those types of outfits but my 6 year old daughter LOVES to be as girly as possible…ah how times change. She loves frilly looking dresses, head bands, and tights. LOL love her to death but sometimes I have to battle her on what she wants to wear LOL All the things you have to look forward to when she gets older. My son just wants clothes on LOL he’s easy to please!
I’m glad to hear all is going well. Don’t worry…your bank account will take a hit. Girls are super easy to buy for as you can pretty much find something cute at any store. She’ll be spoiled rotten so I don’t think you’ll be at a loss for things for her to wear or play with!

Please, dear heaven, not princess themed anything. Everytime I see a child in “Daddy’s little princess” anything, I want to barf. ..

The girl clothes are SO SCARY. Ugh. They drive me NUTS.

    swing = soooo necessary. :D!

Get a swing and a bouncer!!! The aren’t just wants. Needed them for my wee ones. Especially if nothing else works and you’re so tired from lack of sleep you would do anything to make baby comfy. My baby had problems with milk protein intollerance, but wasn’t diagnosed until he was 6 weeks old. I was a walking zombie until we figured it out. The time he spent in the swing or bouncy saved my sanity. I would get one for sure.

Don’t forget I’m going to knit something!

You like pink. I hate pink! UGH! It seems that all they do out here is predominantly pink for girl’s clothing. Such a cliché! Fortunately, I’ve managed to find girl’s clothes which isn’t pink, but it was a long search.

I’m also not crazy about frilly dresses, bows on heads or poofy dresses. Once again, I’ve managed to find all girl’s things without those. WIN!

I’ve got plenty of girl’s clothing that’s newborn size. If you want some, I could send you a few things. Just let me know by e-mail.

I don’t know how bad it is in the States, but here? Your options are pink or blue, and white or yellow IF you’re freaking lucky//willing to look for it. Even the lasses who own the maternity shop downstairs are annoyed by how hard it is to stock neutral things; the pinkification/princessification is a pretty dire issue here.

But yeah… definitely wishing you luck in avoiding the princessifcation factor; now that the secret is out as to what our little one is, I’m kind of gibbering in fear at how much my dad’s sisters will ignore my desire to NOT force my little girl into being some little dollie. -__-

I just realized that I’ve been shopping for Tristin and Tristin only with thoughts of boy only on my mind for so long I don’t even know anymore what the little girl clothes look like these days b/c I don’t pay any attention to them since I have no one to buy them for lol

So I guess this means I should take “Nat doesn’t like frilly girl stuff” into mind when I send you something for bubs. lol

A hex on you!! After reading your post about Dragon Age: Origins, I decided to give it a whirl based solely on your recommendation. You see, my husband and I are avid gamers ourselves, and World of Warcraft has lost some luster recently. Now we are fighting over the XBOX again as he wants to kill zombies and I want to make out with Alistair. lmao!

  12. Nat says:

Rebecca – LOL! Sorry! I told you it was good. :P

Just catching up on a week’s worth of posts. Thrilled that you have a healthy little girl in there. Understandable that you need to mourn and move past the idea of raising a little boy.

Also, I second the thought of getting at LEAST a bouncer for her. O hated the sling, hated the swing, but LOVED the bouncer, so it was a lifesaver for us. I recall many days where I was able to get a shower only because of his bouncer.

Though, truly? You’re right. It’s gravy.

I’m not a fan of frilly either. Target seems to have cute pink and brown clothes that are girly without being overly GIRL. And my girlfriend who has a toddler daughter seems to be able to find cute girl clothes without them being over the top.

Just stopping by to say happy 20 weeks!

If you have a Carter’s outlet nearby they have a TON of stuff that is girly without being frilly. I like frilly, but the practical side of me appreciates easy to wash and care for stuff. Plus the prices are great. Kohl’s also tends to carry a lot of Carter’s stuff.

    Hi Natalie,
Just checking your blog and catching up and wanted to wish you a happy new year! Also, thrilled to hear you’re having a girl! (Would’ve been thrilled for you with a boy too though!)

Just one thing I thought of as I was reading … I know how annoying unsolicited advice is, but here goes anyway … I would hold off on buying the pump, if you haven’t already got it. If you have any way of doing it, try out a few first, before you invest in one. I had a manual pump and it was awful, I ended up renting a different one from the pharmacy and then buying an electric one — so much better!

Just speaking from experience, hope I haven’t annoyed! Take care and have a fantastic 2010 with Den and your baby girl — can’t wait to meet her!
