Relaxing Doesn't Make Babies

It gets harder a little at a time

Jan 10, 2008 — 7:18 pm

When I came home from work today (a whole 4 hour work day!) I said to Den I would probably be going to bed at 9pm today – which, for me, is really early. Well it’s now quarter to 7pm and I’m questioning whether or not I’ll make it even another hour. I am flat out exhausted. I was awake at 7:30 this morning due to my phone ringing (minor emergency at work that I had to take care of), and just started my day from there. Last night I fell asleep at 11pm so I thought I’d be fine. Apparently not. My energy has been seriously lagging all day. I took a shower just before noon just so I would manage to not fall asleep sitting at my desk.

My phone actually rung several times this morning in order to wake me up, so I was laying there half-awake for a little while. I think even if my boss hadn’t called more than once I still wouldn’t have been able to get back to sleep… my hips were aching again. :( Not like it was the other day, no… but they were definitely achy. I rolled from side to side and couldn’t get comfortable. I’m sure my breathing issues is having an impact on them, since it’s not very easy to adjust my sleeping position like it would normally be, but I also know that my hips are going to start getting worse now. And unfortunately several friends have told me that there’s not much I can do about it, no matter how soft the bed is, it’s going to hurt. :( Fun fun.

After taking care of the work emergency I came home and… I cleaned. Like I walked in, decided I had to clean the bathroom floor. RIGHT THAT INSTANT. I hadn’t eaten breakfast, I was starving for the pancakes I intended to make, but I COULD NOT start the pancakes until the bathroom had been cleared out and vacuumed. I mopped/scrubbed the floors after eating, but I had to at least vacuum first. The mopping only does so much good. Even scrubbing with a sponge. That linoleum in there is too old and stained to really actually look good. I really want to replace it, but that’s just yet another thing on our list of things to spend our money on – money we don’t really have right now. So even when I was done cleaning I was still mildly irritated with the bathroom… but it does look a lot better than it did. A lot better.

I also cleaned the kitchen… loaded the dishwasher, scrubbed the counters, brushed crumbs off the floor. Den said, “You’re really nesting, aren’t you.” I replied, “Duh!”

I am starting to get a little more sore at work. I did practice squatting while I was sweeping up a couple messes at work, that was good. But even just being on my feet for a while started hurting my feet. I had to take a break to sit down and eat something. Also, bending over really hurt my head, but that’s because of my sinuses, not the baby, lol.

When I got home from work I shortly felt a lot of pressure in my uterus… that same weird thing again. Almost like I have to pee… but not quite. Just heavy pressure. I felt my belly and sure enough found a large hard spot right in the middle. It wasn’t a BH though, as it wasn’t my whole uterus (and I didn’t have that tingly feeling) – I layed down to check, and the top and bottom of my uterus was normal, but across my belly button and extending to both sides was very hard. The only thing I can figure is that I was feeling his back. I wasn’t feeling any kicks or anything, so it makes sense that he had flipped to face my spine. Very weird!! Half an hour later it had gone back to normal and I was feeling little punches again… he wasn’t really active, but I’d feel something regularly. (And right now of course he is facing forward and doing his “everything all at once” dance, causing my belly to jiggle around in every which direction like I have popcorn popping inside.) I need to ask the midwife tomorrow what she thinks. Maybe she can even get a feel for what position he’s in… though I suspect it’s still too early for them to tell.

Okay, time for a nap. I have a midwife appointment early tomorrow morning so I’m going to have to try my best to sleep all night. Though as tired as I feel that shouldn’t be too hard!

Interaction; Sleep

Jan 11, 2008 — 4:02 am

Laying here watching my belly move (he’s shaking my whole belly with a couple of good kicks), watching him poke at one spot just left of my belly button. I put my hand there and gentle felt the area… a small hard spot. He pushed back. I almost burst into tears. That’s my baby in there. I can almost TOUCH him. I love him so much.

::

I am awake because I fell asleep at 7:30pm and woke up at midnight with a bladder that was fit to burst. (Not from the kid, though… just because I hadn’t peed at all recently and boy did it hurt!) Then of course I couldn’t fall back asleep.

Discovered some more about the hip thing: my left hip hurts like hell whenever I roll onto it. It feels like a pinched nerve there, just below/behind the bone. I press in one spot and paaaiiinnn. So I can’t really lay on that side… unless I lean to my front or lean to my back. No laying directly on my side. Interesting.

Unfortunately this means that I’m sleeping 90% on my right side, which means by the time I wake up my right hip is aching. Not hurting in concentrated pain like the left, but just general achiness from being slept on too long.

Fantastic. This should be interesting. Maybe I should look into getting a massage… as if we can afford that right now. (Bank account… not doing well. Need to get our taxes done so we can get our return to buy the rest of the baby stuff we’ll need. Thank the light for a springtime baby and tax returns.)

Have to be up in 3 hours to go to my 28 week appointment and glucose tolerance test. Fun stuff people. I hope it goes well.

28 Week Appointment

Jan 11, 2008 — 11:38 am

This morning I was awake before my alarm yet again. Still having issues with sleeping comfortably, though I’m willing to bet part of that is because my favorite positions block my airways. Can’t wait until I completely kick this sinus thing… but it’s definitely on its way. But at least I had to get up early anyways, so it wasn’t a wasted morning. :)

I got there a little early because it was raining (people drive slow, arg) and because my insurance has changed so I wanted to make sure I gave them a little time to get the new info put in. I checked in with registration, they told me to go to the Midwife’s office with the info. So I did. She took the new card and looked at it puzzled. She asked if I have the BC/BS HMO. I said, “Ummm, it’s the federal program…” I have no idea if it’s an HMO or not, I know it’s different than the “normal” one though. She said the card was for prescriptions. o.O That really caught me off-guard. We didn’t get any *other* card in the mail, just these ones. But she took it and did some photocopying and whatever else. When I got home I checked the mail, and the stuff that came with the card clearly states this IS my health insurance card, for everything, that I need to show at doctor’s offices. So I think she was just confused, probably because it is a different BC/BS program than normal.

So anyways, I sat for 5 minutes while she photocopied and got my glucose tolerance test order printed off, then I went down to the lab. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it tasted JUST LIKE orange soda. It was even carbonated a little – NOT something I appreciate, my body does not like carbonation. The hardest part for me was drinking the whole drink in 5 minutes! Soda is really difficult for me to drink, I usually sip it. I didn’t feel any dizziness or queasiness, just bloating and burping, lol. But I got it all down and was on my way back to the waiting room.

I sat and waited 10 minutes before someone called me back. The nurses (the usual nurse seemed to be training a young nurse) took my blood pressure (98/58) and weight (153.2) then sent me into the bathroom for a “sample”. Then sat me in a room. Where I waited. And waited. I waited quite a while and was getting a little anxious, because I had to be back to the lab for the blood draw at a specific time.

Finally the midwife came in and introduced herself. I loved her!! She gave me the same vibe my old midwife gave me… very down to earth and friendly and knew what she was talking about. I just liked her immediately. She asked me if I had any questions or concerns this month. I told her about the hip pain (not much can be done about that, it’s pretty normal), that I’ve weaned myself off the unisom (she was pleased with my weight gain), and that I’m just getting over a cold. She asked if I took anything, I told her I took some Sudafed but it did nothing so I just waited it out. She said, “Oh I’m sorry.” I shrugged – no biggie, my body took care of it. :)

I did ask her about the Celexa/Zoloft issue and how I think it’s best to switch, based on the reading I’ve done. She confirmed that I’ve been on Celexa for a long time (yep)… and she said that there is always concern switching someone who has been long established on a particular drug, as other ones might not work as well. That’s not to say they can’t switch me, but that it may or may not be in my best interest to do so. She said they obviously want to make sure that after the baby’s born, with my hormones going all crazy and the stress and everything, that my medication is stable. So she said she wants to talk it over with the other Midwives and let me know what they think would be best for me and my baby. I’m okay with that. If they honestly think that staying on the Celexa is better for me and Devin than playing around swith a new one, then I’ll trust their judgement on it. My concern is, of course, that it is passed through the breastmilk more with Celexa than with Zoloft. I’ll also have to talk with a lactation consultant and with Devin’s pediatrician (when I choose one). It’s a hard situation, there’s no real clear answer, both options have risks and benefits.

I also asked her what the standard newborn procedures were and what could and couldn’t be refused. She said that ANY procedure can be refused – it’s just a matter of how much resistence you’d get from the nurse at the time. Apparently someone recently declined the Vitamin K injection and there was a bit of a hubub about the hospital about it. Her suggestion was to talk it over with the pediatrician – if the ped is okay with not getting something, then chances of having a problem are lowered. She did say that the eye antibiotics can be declined without much issue, the Hep B vaccination is fully up to us whether or not we want to get it done in the hospital (or at all). She did say that they’ll test me for Group B Strep at 35 weeks, and if I’m positive for that then they will want to hook me up to antibiotics via IV during labor. She also said that in cases where women arrive too late or their labors are too fast to get the “full” dose of antibiotics they tend to want to keep the baby at the hospital for several days for observation and cultures and put them on antibiotics just in case. But again, she said it does depend on the pediatrician, and some peds say if there’s no sign of an issue then they don’t worry about it, but others want to keep the kid for observation for an extended period, etc. So quite obviously the choice of pediatrician is going to be important. (And I just hope I don’t test positive for GBS!)

After all that was discussed I hopped up on the table for a quick listen for the heartbeat. She did a quick feel of my belly before putting the wand down, and immediately there it was. I didn’t get a number, but it was loud and strong. She also measured my belly to be 28cm! Perfect! :)

I did mention to her about that pressure I’ve been feeling now and again, and the hard area across my belly when he apparently moves into that position. She said it’s very possible that I’m feeling is back or whatever. :) Course he wasn’t doing it at the appointment so she has no way to know. LOL

Then she flipped through my charts and mentioned I’d never had a TB test… I guess it’s something where they put a little tiny something under your skin and you watch it for two days to see if a big bump develops. She said I can choose to refuse it if I want. I shrugged and said I don’t really see a point in it – hard to make an informed decision when I’m sitting there. So she just nodded and that was that. Then she asked if they’d given asked me for a a clean catch urine sample or not. Well no. They had me pee into a cup, but no clean catch. So she asked if I could do that for a culture. I said I’d try. Boy was that difficult. I managed to squeeze out a few drops of urine. Yeesh.

I quickly booked my next appointment – for two weeks from now! – and then headed quickly back to the lab. I sat a few minutes then they drew three vials of blood (testing my blood sugar, for syphillis, and for anemia) and I was on my way. I did forget to ask the Midwife if they would call me with the results of the GTT, so at this point I have no idea when I’ll find out if I passed or not. I’m sure if I failed it they’ll call me, but otherwise… I may just have to wait 2 weeks for confirmation.

Changing Body

Jan 12, 2008 — 4:23 am

Okay what is with this? I hit the third trimester and whammo, my body freaks out on me. That’s really quite cruel, especially after I was saying how wonderful I was feeling and how I didn’t have X or Y. Ha! My body is so funny.

Yesterday the rib thing started. I have no idea if it’s temporary or not, and it’s not constant, but I am getting frequent little twinges in the right side of my ribs. It comes and goes. It’s not quite painful, but uncomfortable, like I need to stretch and rub my ribs. Just like someone is pushing on them in a weird way… hmm, wonder why. ;)

I did have a good sleep without aches and pains though! I tried sleeping at first in my old favorite position of nearly being on my stomach, but with a pillow under my top leg… but I always sleep on my arm in that position and it was starting to fall asleep a little bit. I do think I fell asleep like that, though. I woke up in a totally different position… on my back, with that pillow under one side of my butt/back so I was tilted at an angle… and one of the cats was curled up in the crook of my arm with his little head nestled under my chin. That arm was going numb a little bit but I had to just stay there for a while and cuddle with him. Awwwww. He’s usually a very pushy cat who likes to lay ON your face and step on my hair, so for him to curl up nicely like that is really very sweet! I do love my kitties.

And the best part is that my hips weren’t hurting at all! Yippee! The last three nights I’ve been sleeping in “shifts”… I fall asleep in the evening at around 7 or 8pm, then wake up just after midnight. I’m awake for a few hours, I eat, pee, surf the internet, get up and walk around, then I go back to sleep for another 3-4 hours. Not really ideal in terms of getting decent sleep, but it does seem to help keep the stiffness at bay. I’m not really thrilled with falling asleep at my computer by 7pm though. But a large part of that is due to me having three very early mornings in a row. If I’m up early and don’t have a nap during the day I do tend to crash early. The reason I’m such a nighthawk normally is that I don’t get up until after 10am!

Devin has still been doing that funny position, being at work today was really weird because it’s an odd pressure that makes me have to pee even though I don’t have to pee. Then when I got home and climbed into bed with my laptop I look down and notice my belly is way lopsided. Something large and round pushing out my right side. I called Den in to ask if I was nuts, but he saw it too right away. Then a few minutes later I felt movement and looked down to see my belly ROLL and the ride side push out even further! For some reason I just keep picture him shoving his butt up. lol Goodness that was funny/weird. Den pointed out that it’s going to get a lot weirder as he grows!!

::

In the hospital for my midwife appointment today I saw at least one mama who was there for a NST. She was obviously due or overdue. I looked at her belly for a moment in wonder. It was a beautiful, perfect belly. Large, sure… but beautiful.

I admit that, amid all the times where I feel so perfect and gorgeous and proud of my belly I think how much bigger is it going to get in the next three months?? I know I’m not huge by any stretch, but it seems hard to wrap my brain around continuing to grow for 3 more months!

But then I remind myself… all through this pregnancy it always seemed hard to picture myself in a month. And yet every time I get to the next “stage” it feels so normal and natural that I can’t really remember what it was like to feel any smaller. There’s really no sense worrying about how big I’m going to be… it will be what it is and I’m pretty sure that it will feel completely normal to me.

::

I’m still getting around remarkably well. I have a very obvious baby belly now, but, other than some minor difficulties (like bumping into things when I try to scoot past!) I’m not having any problems.

I waddle… when my hips hurt in the early morning. Or if I have to pee really bad, lol. Other than that I’m just fine. I even jogged to my car today after my appointment (it was raining, and I can’t find my damn umbrella), no issue at all.

I do have to bend/lift differently than I used to… more of a wide-legged squat to make room for the belly. And it is certainly a little harder to get up than it used to be, a little more weight to push up! But still not much of an issue. I’m bending down to pick things up/wipe something up all day at work and home.

I do get winded more easily than I used to, though that’s been happening since my first trimester. Carrying things up and down the stairs at work causes me to get warm (I dress in layers so I can wear just a light shirt when I overheat!) and need to stop to breathe a bit. But it’s not like I’m going to keel over dead or anything, just a little winded. And the other funny thing is that as my belly grows larger it’s harder to carry things, because the belly kind of pushes whatever I’m carrying out further. It’s a little less stable than it used to be, lol. (And don’t worry, I don’t try to lift everything up at once!)

::

At work I felt that heavy pressure thing again and sure enough the middle of my belly was firm, some body part pressing against it. I went over to my supervisor and asked if she wanted to feel something funny… she seems quite awed by the whole thing (and a little grossed out at the same time, lol). She said, “Wow, your belly really is… pregnant!!” LOL! That cracked me up.

Tuesday evening I had a meeting with my supervisor and boss. Now my boss is not one of those touchy feely types. She has no kids and doesn’t seem to display much interest in kids or babies. Polite interest, sure, but she is NOT one to fawn over babies or ask how I’m feeling or what’s new with the baby. Very matter of fact lady. So it surprized me when after the meeting we passed in the hallway as I was leaving and she patted my belly as she walked by and said, “Hee hee!” I was quite amused by that, it was just so unexpected from her.

I am discovering that I don’t mind people touching my belly nearly as much as I thought I would. I’m normally very attached to my personal space and don’t like people invading it, even standing too close gets me a little anxious. But the belly? I am just so damn proud of it that I want to show it off. :D And it’s not like I’ve been groped or anything, people usually ask if I mind, then just pat it gently. That’s cool. I don’t mind that. :) Especially if they ask first.

Apparently it’s party time in my uterus

Jan 12, 2008 — 9:41 pm

Good grief this kid is active today! And he’s getting ever stronger, he shakes my whole belly sometimes now. Or else he just rolls around, which is a strong feeling in and of itself, and not entirely pleasant!

I slept until 9am this morning (then I just kind of layed there for an hour)… wow, that’s a long stretch for me! (I think I fell asleep shortly after 4am.) Part of the reason I’m having troubles sleeping for a long stretch is that I wake up all sweaty. It’s gross. It’s like I’m hot and cold all at once… but honestly I think the sweats aren’t because I’m hot. And when I do sweat it starts evaporating and I wake up freezing cold. So now I’m sleeping in a nightshirt and still waking up at least once feeling yucky.

Everyone kept saying how lucky I was (or rather how lucky Den was) that I’m pregnant during the winter, as “pregnant women are heaters!” Yeah. Apparently not THIS pregnant woman. I’m still cold all the time. I do get warm at work with walking up and down the stairs, but at home? At night? Any other time? COLD. I live in my turtlenecks. I’m sleeping in a nightshirt or I can’t fall asleep because my shoulders are cold. Den’s always said I was cold-blooded, lol.

Oh and my hip? This morning it was not happy with me. I was ticked because after my first sleep (7:30am until about midnight) I felt GREAT! No hip pain at all! Then I go sleep some more and wake up in pain. Way to tease me, body. So I felt like a stereotypical pregnant lady, limping/waddling around the grocery store this morning. The hip is feeling much better by now… it only lasts for a couple of hours after I get up (so far), thank goodness. If it continues like this I may check into seeing a chiropractor about it… I’ve never been, but Den goes to a chiro monthly and we know our insurance covers it (all but a small copay). I know some friends swear by seeing a chiropractor when pregnant. I’m a little skeeved by the idea, to be honest… but that’s my personal hangup.

I’m falling asleep again… at 9pm. *sigh* Guess sleeping in didn’t really help reset my internal clock much.

I posted my normal belly pics in the belly pics page, but here are some extras.

Pain

Jan 13, 2008 — 9:45 am

Woke up this morning feeling like Devin was pressing hard on my left ovary. I can’t say that’s what was happening, but that’s what it felt like. Peeing didn’t relieve the pressure, and bending over made it worse. I got myself a bowl of cereal sat down at my desk in the hopes it would go away soon.

Unfortunately over the next half hour it progressed from left belly pressure to pain in my left pelvis and hip. PAIN. So much I could barely walk. I thought for a little bit it was one of my infamous stomach aches starting up. But it didn’t go that way… it went down my left pelvis. I tried walking (hobbling) around to loosen whatever it was up. I tried going potty, hoping that would help. I sat in my chair and shifted around. Nothing helped. I was really worried I’d end up having to call/go into the hospital, as sure as I was it wasn’t any kind of labor pains or anything wrong with the baby (he was moving around still), there’s still that fear. So I was walking around going, “Please, no, I don’t want to go to the hospital!” I decided if the pain didn’t go away during the day that I’d call.

I ended up crawling into bed whimpering. Den woke up and asked me if I was okay, I just said, “No.” I explained to him what I was feeling and he said it sounds like my sciatic nerve. (After reading up on it, it sure sounds like it to me.) I layed on my side (my right side) and he massaged my left side and hip and yeah… I could definitely feel spots where he’d press and it would send shooting pain down my left leg. It was a constant dull ache, with frequent, random stabbing pains in my hip and side. NOT fun. At all.

So I ended up laying there in bed for over an hour, surrounded and propped up by about 14 pillows (okay that’s a slight exaggeration, it’s more like 4). I found a position that was least painful, on my side, and just didn’t move. I wasn’t tired (as if I could sleep anyways), so I just chatted away to Den about everything under the sun. He was a very good listener, I must say.

I still have a bit of an ache/pressure against what feels like my ovary, though. I have no idea if that’s even related though. It could be just a coincidence.

It did get me thinking that I should probably start training my supervisor on how to do the things that I do at work… I took them over a year ago and it’s changed a lot since she did them. We were planning to have me transition things over to her starting mid-February, but then today I was thinking what if I did end up in the hospital, even for a couple of days? No one would know what to do. That’d be bad.

Okay, this is better

Jan 14, 2008 — 11:25 am

You probably noticed I moved the blog to a different URL. I’ve been meaning to do it for months now, since “ttc” really didn’t fit anymore, but I kept putting it off figuring it’d be complicated. Yeah. It took me about 30 seconds. I just hope everyone found their way over here.

::

I’ve managed to get a handle on the pain, and I’d discovered what a large part of the problem was/is: sitting in my chair at my desk. That’s where I eat my meals, at my desk. So this morning I get up and get a bowl of cereal like usual and sit down… and within minutes the pain starts mounting. So yesterday when I woke up with minor pain and sat down to let it go away? I inadvertently made it far far worse. I know that chair is in good shape, I’ve never had issues with it before and it’s got lots of padding… but something in my body has changed enough that it DOES NOT like that chair. So I spent a lot of time this morning walking around (walking seems to loosen things up). I finally put a pillow on the chair just so I could sit and eat, and that worked okay… but it still wasn’t comfortable by any stretch. It’s a good thing I have my laptop, as it seems I will be spending far more time reclined in bed, doing work here. Granted it’s what I have been doing a lot lately, but now I apparently don’t have much of a choice.

Den sees a chiropractor monthly, and he has an appointment on wednesday… so he’s going to ask them if they see pregnant patients and find out about getting an appointment set for me. Our insurance covers chiropractic care (other than a small copay), and I’ve heard from several other people that dealt with pinched nerves/sciatica that chiro care is the only thing that helped them. Hey it’s worth a try. Even if the whole idea of chiropractic adjustments kind of freak me out.

Other than that I’ll just continue to be careful how I sleep (I can sleep on my left side, but only at certain angles… if I sleep directly on my hip it really really hurts), avoid sitting at that chair, and try to make sure I stretch my legs frequently. I wonder if I warm bath would help at all? This isn’t muscle pain like that one time I had really bad leg pain… so I don’t know how much it would help.

::

Devin’s moved. He has his fingers or his toes really low down… he’s been tickling me down there for about an hour. Very very strange feeling, I must say! I’m not used to feeling movement that low.

And now he’s back to kicking my belly button, like normal.

::

I want to see this, but it is not showing anywhere near us. :( I sure hope they are able to expand to more locations. I’ve added it to my Netflix, but it’s not yet available… it says February 2008 so hopefully I’ll get to watch it before I give birth!

::

I am just so excited… about things that probably most people aren’t excited about. I’m excited about going into labor and seeing what it’s like and birthing my beautiful baby. I’m excited about breastfeeding. I’m excited about using my cloth diapers. And then of course there’s the normal excitement over meeting my baby for the first time… seeing what he looks like… seeing if he has hair, if he has a big nose (heh), seeing his precious little fingers and toes.

Phone Calls and Shopping

Jan 15, 2008 — 7:41 am

I was unable to post last night because I didn’t get home until 9pm and I was frankly exhausted by then. I should not be out driving past 8. Just so tired. :(

What happened to throw off my day was… snow. A lot of snow. It snowed all morning, delaying everything. Most of my normal work things for Mondays were cancelled (the orders), but there were no volunteers going to be there so I went in at around 2:30 after the (steep) driveway had been plowed). Me and a coworker had to clean and feed the entire sanctuary. But it was okay. :)

Because I had been sitting at home all morning I used that time to be productive, since it was “normal business hours.” I made a ton of phone calls, things that were on my to-do list.

* I called the hospital I’ll be delivering at to register for some classes. They are really cheap ($10 per class, the tour is free). I obviously don’t need labor classes as we’re paying good money to take Bradley classes, but there were other things I did want to make sure I attended.
– Breastfeeding Class, Part I is booked for March 13, Part II (for after baby arrives) is booked for May 6.
– Infant Care Class is booked for March 6.
– The tour of the L&D is set for Feb 2.

* I contacted a local La Leche League group to find out details. Their next meeting is Feb 1, in the morning… so I think I will go to that. I’m a little nervous about going to a group situation like that, but I’ve heard from so many people how beneficial LLL is, and I’d like to meet them before I have Devin.

* I called a local Pediatrician’s office to set up a consult. I was a little nervous about this because we don’t have many Ped offices in the immediate vicinity, and I wasn’t really keen on searching neighboring cities. This one I called is literally just down the road from us. The receptionist was extremely friendly. She congratulated me on being pregnant, asked a few questions, and told me a lot about the practice. They have multiple pediatricians there, two nurses. They are open for regular hours M-F, with an hour walk-in appointments in the morning and “sick visit” hours in the evening. They have two separate lines to call… one to book normal appointments, and one for sick visits where they get you the soonest possible appointment time. She also said they have 7 day coverage for emergencies.

So that all sounded good. She booked me for a consult with one of the peds for March 5, which was the soonest consult appointment they had I guess. I asked her what the practice’s general philosophy on vaccines and breastfeeding were. She said, “Well… whatever works for you, I mean… whatever you want.” She said they have some families there who do not vaccinate. This is huge! Yay! I’ve heard stories of friends of mine whose doctors literally kick them out if they do not agree to vaccinate their children on the doctor’s schedule. The fact that they have families there who do not vaccinate is a GREAT sign. The breastfeeding “whatever works for you” is a little laisse-faire, it probably doesn’t speak of a strong breastfeeding support system there, but hopefully they’re supportive enough not to give bad advice. I am trying to make sure I have a good support system in place for breastfeeding, if I need help. I know peds aren’t exactly trained in lactation support!

* I also emailed with my MIL about my shower. I had mentioned those little registry card inserts for invites, and MIL thought that was a good idea… but she simply does not have the availability to go get some from BRU anytime this week. So I offered to.

And that’s what I did after work. I left work at 6 and drove to the mall. I ate dinner (Subway! No greasy foods after all the heartburn I’ve been having – though I did also get a milkshake) and then made my way to BRU to get those registry cards printed. And of course I got a scanner and added a few more things to my registry to finish it off. I couldn’t find any white newborn socks though, that frustrated me. I just want a big package of white newborn socks. They had a ton of larger sizes… nothing in newborn. Grrr. Guess I’ll have to pick some up elsewhere, it’s not a big deal. I added a 2-pack of Born Free bottles. I have a Breastflow starter kit on my registry, but… options, need options. I keep hearing that babies choose which bottles they prefer. Not like I’m going to be introducing a bottle for a while, but just in case I figure it’s good to have on-hand. I looked at some playmat/gym things and changed my mind on which one I wanted. And then I added a bunch of baby books to my registry, in case people are looking for small items… and I certainly want to encourage books!

Oh, and then I’m standing in the middle of BRU staring at the cribs and I call Den. “Den, should I just order the crib we want while I’m here?” Den basically says, ummm yeah, duh. So I sat down to do so. The guy writes down the crib info and types it in, then runs into the back of the store. He comes back and says, “Yep, we have one back there!”

Hold. The. Phone.

Buying a crib is such a huge thing. I don’t know why it makes me so nervous, but it does. A crib. A freaking CRIB. For a baby. It’s a big piece of furniture. And not only do I always get some anxiety when purchasing big items (what if I change my mind??), but it’s for our baby. I’m not sure I’m really ready to be ordering a crib!

BUT I figured I’d have 4-6 weeks for it to arrive and by then I’d be okay with bringing a crib home. I was NOT figuring on having the crib available immediately. Not ready!!

So I stuttered a little bit and managed to get out, “Oh! Good!” However, despite me having the SUV at the time, the guy looked SERIOUSLY doubtful about my ability to fit it in an SUV. “It’s big,” he said. “Really big.” So we are going to need to arrange for BIL to help us pick it up in his truck. Whew. This gives me at least a few days to get used to the idea that we’re going to have a crib in the house.

Not that we have anywhere to put it. Baby’s room is not a baby’s room. Crib will have to go into the basement, un-assembled, for quite some time. Baby-steps here.

Oh and I bought the mattress too.

(Den’s comment last night was, “So we have a crib and a mattress. When is the kid going to use the crib?” “Ummm. When we decide to move him to his own room.” “Right. So the one thing we have, we aren’t going to use for a long time.” “Right.” “Okay then.” But we were given money specifically for the crib so… oh well! Crib it is!)

On my way out of the mall I stopped by Target to buy some new underwear. I wear a specific kind of underwear that I LOVE: Gilligan & O’Malley. Very very comfy. Unfortunately some of mine are starting to do the butt-creep. I’m not entirely convinced my butt is getting bigger, but things are definitely stretching and my undies are getting aweful tight across my belly. So I wanted to do what other ladies have recommended, and buy a size up. No biggie right? HA!! They have different styles: bikini, brief, hipster and thong. They have multiple sizes. They seemed to have every conceivable combination except large bikinis. I found ONE package out of a whole huge shelf. I was very unamused (and sweaty, by that point). So at least I now have one package (of three) in a size that is comfortable. Grrr. Need more undies!

And then I drove home and tried not to fall asleep while doing so.

But at least I got to cross a bunch of things off my to-do list and feel quite accomplished. Though, how come I got all that done in one day and yet I still feel like I didn’t really do much with my time?

Toys, Tickles and Tired

Jan 15, 2008 — 9:01 pm

I’ve been awake since 6am. It is now closing in on 8pm and I am seriously zonked (yes, in my world that is a word). I am somehow functioning without naps…

And starving. I ate a nice big salad (with chicken and egg) at noon before I went to work, but unfortunately the snacking while at work wasn’t all that plentiful nor healthy. So by the time I got home at 7? Yeah. Starving. I sucked down a large bowl of soup and am now eating an apple. Boy apples are good.

The last couple days I think Devin’s been head-down. Why do I think this? Because first of all, while at work I’m getting this general, constant need to pee. There’s just some weird pressure down there that wasn’t there before. And then there are the little wiggles. It feels like someone is literally tickling my bladder from the inside. Not strong kicks, but little movement really low… I’m thinking hands? I still get some kicks up around my belly button. Hmmmm.

Earlier today my SIL (the one who’s pregnant) forwarded me an email from a friend of hers. Friend is getting rid of some toddler toys, SIL doesn’t have any storage space for things in the future so she wondered if I wanted any of them. One of them was the Drop and Roar Dino! It had already made it’s way onto my “wish list for the future” because it looks so damn cool. I really hope we can get it… how cool!! (It may be one of those toys that I play with more than the kid. I understand this, lol!) Another toy was a little piano. Yay!

On my drive home I was thinking about these toys I hopefully will be getting and thinking about next Christmas. I was tired and my mind was really wandering a lot, but I was just thinking about wish lists and toys and family and next Christmas we will have a son. I almost started crying in the car (not recommended while driving). What an amazing, amazing thought.

Need sleep now. Intelligent thought later.

Hiccups!!

Jan 17, 2008 — 4:49 pm

Ahhhhhhhh, Devin has the hiccups!!! This is the first time I’ve ever noticed hiccups! I’ve kept an “eye” out for them, since my friends all mention it frequently, but any movement from Devin is his normal stuff, nothing rhythmic or repeating. Until today! Feels like I have a twitch in my stomach… he’s been moving around a lot all day, so I rubbed the spot as usual… that’s when I noticed the twitch was happening every 2-3 seconds. Twitch…. twitch…. twitch. AH HA! HICCUPS!!

Tee hee, the smallest things amuse me so very much. :)
