Relaxing Doesn't Make Babies

Breastfeeding and Medication

Nov 21, 2005 — 4:24 am

Well crap… I found out that it’s probably save to continue Celexa and Wellbutrin during pregnancy but Wellbutrin is not safe for breastfeeding, Celexa may not be either. :(

Celexa appears in breast milk and will affect the nursing infant. You should consider discontinuing either breastfeeding or Celexa. Talk with your doctor about the pros and cons of each option.
Wellbutrin does pass into breast milk and may cause serious reactions in a nursing baby; therefore, if you are a new mother, you may need to discontinue breastfeeding while you are taking this medication.

Damn. I’ll have to research other drugs, and find out what is okay during breastfeeding and what isn’t. I really don’t want to not breastfeed.

Another source:

# The safety of this medicine in pregnancy has not been established. It should therefore be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if the benefits to the mother outweigh any risks to the foetus. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
# This medicine passes into breast milk, however the effect of this on the nursing infant is unknown. For this reason women who need to take this medicine should consider not breastfeeding. Seek medical advice from your doctor.

The SSRIs are classified as “B” or “C” (fluoxetine, paroxetine and sertraline are “B”, citalopram and fluvoxamine are “C”). The SSRIs are not teratogenic in animals, and most human data is for fluoxetine. No major abnormalities have been reported to date with paroxetine, but some “discontinuation” effects (such as increased breathing rate and jitteriness) have been seen in a few infants for a couple of days after birth, so it may be wise to reduce the dose a little before your due date.

OPKs

Nov 21, 2005 — 4:40 am

Because I am really unsure of how my body’s going to take things, seeing how I just got off the pill, and because my weird sleep schedule makes temping a bit less then ideal, I ordered some OPKs (Ovulation Predictor Kits) online from SaveOnTests – 25 test strips for $10. A lot of women at FF use them because they’re really cheap (at the pharmacy OPKs were like $20 for three tests, ugh!). This way at least I’ll be able to make sure I ovulated.

So, no ovulation yet. I ordered the internet cheapies but they still haven’t arrived and I keep feeling like I’m going to O this weekend or early next week. These suckers are expensive, though – at least the Brooks brand wasn’t AS expensive as the others (these were $17 for 7 tests).

NOT a pregnancy test, so don’t freak out. ;)

A little bit worried that I missed my surge, since at first it was so much lighter than yesterday’s, but it’s slowly darkening.

Sleeping Schedule

Nov 28, 2005 — 5:58 pm

This sleep thing is so hard. I have managed to settle into a pattern the last few days, unfortunately it’s not the one I wanted: I’ve been waking up at 3am, every day, comletely on my own. I don’t know what’s up with that. I set my alarm for 6, but not once have I been asleep long enough to be woken by it. I do sometimes fall back asleep afterwards, but it doesn’t help much… every day after 6pm I’m fighting to stay awake, and by 9pm I give in and go to bed. Then it’s back awake at 3am. *pulls hair out* I need more sleep than this. Body: sleep in until 6am, for the love of light!

Temperature Drop

Nov 29, 2005 — 8:47 am

Woke up at just after 2:30am this time. Well at least it’s letting me take more accurate temperatures, right?

Which in fact dropped dramatically. I did have the window open a crack, but that’s because I absolutely couldn’t fall asleep with how warm it was in there… when I woke up I wasn’t even cold, just comfortable. So, while that may have contributed slightly (at least to my oral temp), I think my overall temp still dropped. Which is a good sign, means I haven’t O’d yet but likely will shortly.

By the way, a few days ago I started taking two temps, since I bought another thermometer. Originally I had just bought whatever thermometer I found, which happened to be a regular BD brand. Well the other day while looking for OPKs I found BD Basal thermometers, so I bought one. I’m using that one to take my temperature vaginally – to hopefully get a more accurate reading – and still using the other one to take my temp orally, as I can’t switch mid-cycle or it’ll screw up my chart in a big way. But I am still tracking both in an excel spreadsheet. I even figured out how to get a two-series line chart to compare them. :) I’ll upload that chart periodically.
